Tile Calculator
Estimate tiles needed from project area, tile size, and waste allowance.
How this tool works
Estimate tile quantity before buying materials for a floor, wall, or backsplash. CasaLabs calculators keep assumptions visible, use source-backed formulas, and avoid storing personal information.
How to use it
- Enter the project area in square feet.
- Enter one tile’s length and width in inches.
- Add waste allowance and tiles per box.
Formula
Tiles = ceiling(project area ÷ tile area × (1 + waste percent)); boxes = ceiling(tiles ÷ tiles per box).
Example
A 100 sq ft project with 12 in by 12 in tiles and 10% waste needs about 110 tiles. With 10 tiles per box, buy 11 boxes.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting cuts around edges and fixtures.
- Using tile dimensions in inches without converting to square feet.
- Underestimating waste for diagonal or patterned layouts.
Assumptions
- Project area and tile size must use compatible units.
- Waste allowance helps account for cuts, breakage, and layout changes.
- Patterned layouts and diagonal installs usually need more waste.
